A lot depends on your goal. If you want to spend time with family for the most part I'd say fly. If you want to enjoy the experience of travel with a shorter family visit then driving could be the way to go.
20-30 days out is typically the best time to buy tickets, however, I don't know if the Christmas season follows that, same with Thanksgiving.

I recently made that drive myself. I flew in to Reagan, bought a car in VA, then drove it back home. The drive was about 20 hours straight through.

Winter storms could make it much worse... or it could be perfectly clear for the entire drive. It is too bad that the weather can't really be predicted that far out.

im from the east coast too. and for christmas we are flying from minnesota to baltimore. tickets 97 bucks each way. i just checked and right now if you can get to baltimore. tickets from baltimore to msp are only $119 one way. i would fly. its christmas, you dont know what the weather will be like, kids in the car. and yea driving is cheaper. but only if you do a straight drive. no hotel, no rental car.
