People are buying tablets because they're useful for most people's computer needs. And they get data plans because they want to be able to access the internet wherever. I think we'll see a reduction is data-capable devices in the future not because of falling prices, but because WiFi is becoming more and more accessible, so the data plans are becoming less useful.
Interesting to know that I might not need a data plan.

Here's one snag, though. Wifi is everywhere, but it isn't a secure Internet connection. That means you might not want to type in a crucial ID-password in any connection that isn't WEP. No problem for surfing, but for email and banking, you could get hacked.

Oh ok, very important to know. So how would I ensure that secure internet connection as I will just have a cell phone and a laptop or tablet? I won't bother getting a home phone line as I won't have a need. Currently I have a use a prepaid monthly service and I actually do USB Tethering. I have not used the WiFi for the security issues.

I'm leery of banking on my phone. I just know so little about security through that channel. Banks are going crazy with it, mostly to keep up with competition. But how hackable it is I haven't much clue. So I'm holding off till the information gets clarified for me.
