Hey! I go to school at the U, and am going to be a junior next year. I'm looking to find a nice house to rent with a few friends in a neighborhood that isn't so...college-y, for lack of a better word. I live on the west bank this year in the Grandmarc apartments (overpriced, but we make it work), and am thinking of what plans are as far as next year goes.

We're looking for a quieter, safe neighborhood in Minneapolis that is on a bus route that runs to the U, but probably not in the Dinkytown area or around Stadium Village. Close-ish to a co-op would be GREAT and in a bike-friendly part of town would be better. None of us have cars, so we'll be relying on bikes and busses to motor us where we need to go. We're all pretty low-key, so surrounding entertainment isn't really too necessary - but I am a runner, so near to any bike paths or other areas to run in (safely!) are always a bonus too. Oh, and any area where rent is going to run us more than $450+utilities is gonna be a tough sell....

We've been looking into the Seward neighborhood (but am getting a bit eeked out by all the stuff that is going on in the Ceder-Riverside area recently, yuck) or somewhere in the Uptown area...but not sure how many houses rent out in those areas, vs. people owning them, etc. Any anecdotal information would be much appreciated, as well as any websites that might be helpful (besides craigslist, of course). If you can think of any other neighborhoods that you think would fit for us, please share!

I know this is a bit early to be thinking about next spring all ready, but I like to at least have an idea for what area we should be keeping an eye on. Thanks so much in advance!

Grandmarq... Yuck. I hate mega-complexes like that one. (And what's that thing made out of anyway, particle board and 1/4-inch drywall?) I'd look for a duplex in either Seward, the near side of Northeast, or in the vicinity Como Ave SE.

Just about....you think they would put some sort of insulation between the walls - I can hear the TV playing quietly in the room next to us...not to mention the angry screaming between the girls that live next door... Keeps us entertained, I suppose.
