Hello

I am interested in buying my 1st home in Minneapolis. I own alot of expensive music studio equipment, therefore am nervous about security. Also, am a single female and am worried about personal security. After researching online, I see that a person can install non-evasive looking inside security bars on the windows. These are of high interest to me. Does anyone here know who sells / installs these in Minneapolis? Yes, I would have a home security system too.

I would be buying a starter home under $170,000. These tend to be 1 level homes. Also, the Nokomis neighborhood is on my list.

I am not sure they are allowed in Minneapolis--but I could certainly be wrong. They prevent people from getting out during a fire. I think that if you have a security system that should be enough of a deterrent to thieves.

I have seen bars on windows in Minneapolis + I just checked the Mpls Police site. They recommend putting bars on basement windows.

Definitely make sure you get the kind that allow you to get out of the windows in case of fire, though; when we lived in DC there was a college student who died in a fire after being trapped due to non-release bars. The U.S. Fire Administration suggests calling the local fire department to confirm security options approved for local use. Maybe they could suggest somewhere to buy them, too.

If you're going to be living in Nokomis, you won't need them.

Yes, the inside release bars are the only option that I would consider because of fire. Thanks for recommending that I check with the fire department. I had not thought of that.

Yes, I realize that Nokomis is relatively safe, however 1st floor housing makes me nervous no matter where I am in a large city.

FYI, some of the Minneapolis neighborhoods offer grants for homeowners to add additional security measures - usually things like exterior lighting - so check in with your official neighborhood organization once you've purchased your home.

I second this, my neighborhood organization has been excellent at answering any questions regarding the rules and recommendations for a wide variety of topics including home security.
