Hello everyone. Well, here's yet another relocation message for the board. Boy, MN must be the new hotspot. It seems like there are a ton of people relocating to the Twin Cities.

I'm really hoping to get some advice on where our family should live. Here's the relevant info regarding our move:
  • We'll be moving from Sacramento to MN in early August '07
  • I'll be working in the Arden Hills, New Brighton, Shoreview area
  • My wife will be staying home with our 2 boys (both under 1 year old)
  • We will be doing a lot of entertaining since this will be my first time back in the Midwest near friends and family after 10 years of being stationed around the country while in the military (I'm originally from Wisconsin)
  • We'll need a 4 or 5 bedroom house to support our frequent guests
  • I'm willing to commute up to 30 minutes or more to work
  • Schools are not a big concern as we'll likely move before the boys reach school age
  • We are looking to spend between $350K and $450K
  • We are open to either new construction or older homes
  • We would love to have a nice big backyard
  • A community with character (i.e. shops, restaurants, etc.) would be ideal, but we know we can't have it all

So, with all of those things in mind, does anyone have any thoughts on where we should focus our search? Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Personally, I would want to live in White Bear Lake. Quick to work, older community, but with a wide range of housing choices. Close to downtown St. Paul.

Stillwater--great town, lots of old homes and new construction, great downtown area on the river, great schools so you wouldn't have to move and it is walking distance to Wisconsin.

Arden Hills, New Brighton and Shoreview all are nice; but I still haven't found their "downtown areas" after living in the area for >14 years!

The biggest back yards for those 3 communities is in Arden Hills; but I *think* those are also the priciest homes of the 3 suburbs.

But I also think that White Bear Lake or Stillwater would be great communities to live in too (WBL is much less touristy than Stillwater though; so with 2 little munchkins under 1 year, I'd probably choose it over Stillwater).

From what you have described the general consensus is right on: Stillwater or White Bear Lake.

You are in the driver's seat with respect to purchasing a house in that price range. It is a BUYER'S market. Listings are at an all time high and buyers are few and far between. Builder's are offering big incentives PLUS price reductions.

Do you have financing arranged? If not I would be glad to assist. Send me a PM.

Good luck on the move!
