Hello guys,

I am originally a Brit who moved to Minnesota a couple of months ago. I wouldn't be a Brit if I weren't a hardcore soccer fan. The British Premier League and the European Soccer League games are something that I wait for week after week.

And now to get a taste of American Soccer and watching some talented American players in the British Premier League (Dempsey, Bocanegra, Howard to name a few), I have decided to start following Major League Soccer.

I do not usually start following a team without watching their game, their passing style and other technicalities of soccer. However, I would still like to know if there is some particular team that most soccer fans in Minnesota follow, since there is no local team from Minnesota playing in MLS.

Geographically, Chicago Fire Or Kansas City would be the closest. If you want great atmosphere, take a road trip to Portland, OR and watch a Timbers game with the Timbers Army. RCTID! (Rose City 'Til I Die!)

I would guess that the only soccer team most Minnesotans watch is the one their kids play on.

We used to watch the Kicks all the time, but that was a while ago.

It's tough to really get into it when we don't have a team. Also, the MLS is a B-rate league which tends to get washed up talent like Beckham and Tierry whereas some of our best (Tim Howard, Clint Dempsey) have went to the other side of the Pond to play in the EPL.

We did have the Minnesota Thunder Minnesota Thunder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia but I never got into them and I don't think their games were televised.

I have heard that part of our getting a new NFL stadium had a clause that we are going to get an MLS franchise with that deal, so I will pay attention to that team if we do in fact get one.

No guarantee on the futbol franchise tho the stadium deal allows Zygi up to 5 years on a non-compete basis, to bring in a MLS team. I believe it was the House bill that gave the Vikings potential MLS franchise free rent before the senate version took out the soccer provision entirely. The final bill put back in the 5 year exclusivity provision....

Subd. 15. Major league soccer.
The authority shall, for five years after the first NFL team home game is played in the stadium, grant the NFL team the exclusive right to establish major league soccer at the stadium. The authority and the NFL team may enter into an agreement providing the terms and conditions of such an arrangement, provided: if any of the NFL team owners whose family owns at least three percent of the NFL team purchases full or partial ownership in a major league soccer franchise, such franchise may play in the stadium under a use agreement with similar terms as are applicable to the NFL team which shall include rent based on market conditions but not less than a provision of payment of game-day costs and reasonable marginal costs incurred by the authority as a result of the major league soccer team; and capital improvements required by a major league soccer franchise must be financed by the owners of the major league soccer team, unless otherwise agreed to by the authority.

and while the MLS comish has expressed an interest to add a team(s) in the Midwest, the league has stated that they do not want to be in a fixed roof stadium. It had appeared that a 2nd New York franchise was a virtual certainty a while ago but the latest I heard was that the ownership group trying to bring back the Cosmos name pretty much imploded on itself.

We do have the Minnesota Stars. I think they are fun to watch. I'm not sure what someone who is an actual soccer fan would think of the quality level. They did win their league championship last year, and they did beat the Salt Lake City team from MLS this year (in a tournament where the MLS only won about half their games against teams from lesser leagues, I'm not sure if there's something funny about the tournament or if the level of play is really that close).

In any case games are pretty cheap (I think it's less than $15). And I think they stream all of the games online as well.
