Hello,

I grew up in Faribault, and now live in Owatonna.

Faribault is an alright town, not so beautiful, but alright. I believe four movies were filmed in Faribault... Grumpy Old Men, D3 The Mighty Ducks, Here On Earth, Embrace the Vampire... Grumpy Old Men was filmed downtown Faribault, in an old drug store. That drug store is now an antique shop, named 'Grumpy's Antiques', the others were filmed at Shattuck St. Mary's private school.

Shattuck St. Mary's was a military school, and catholic school once. They joined together and formed a private school. I have heard that Marlon Brando once attended classes at Shattuck St. Mary's, but then got kicked out for stealing the clapper out of their bell tower, starting fires, and also etching his name backstage of their theatre... or so it is rumored.

Around this area, there is Owatonna, 15 minutes south, which was the site of Gunter. Gunther was filmed mostly at the High School. The school has been added onto since. The little restaurant across the street under the water tower no longer exists, but it is now where all of the deviant children of Owatonna go to cut class and have a smoke. As for other locations, you have Northfield, which is the site of numerous movies. All towns have their own distinct beauty, and history. Faribault was founded by a French man. Faribault also has one of the oldest cathedrals in the country... or something of that sort. Northfield is home of the Defeat of Jesse James day, Jesse James, a cowboy/robber made numerous bank robberies around the states... and Owatonna is a town named after the Native American princess, Owatonna, who drank from the springs when she was sick, and became cured. The springs are now known as "Mineral Springs" and you can visit a park which hosts fountains in which you can drink this water from.

All of these towns are located around the Cannon River and Straight River valleys, and each has equal beauty. Faribault has a bluff, and a nature center, Northfield has many bluffs, in between are the Big Woods, a state park.

Red Wing is a beautiful city, and home of the Red Wing Shoe company... and a few miles out of it, Treasure Island Resort & Casino... that is really all I know about Red Wing, but it has a beautiful downtown.

Minnesota is just a beautiful place.

If you do come, venture up to Minneapolis and stop in at the Dakota Jazz Club and Restaurant if you like Jazz... one of the best clubs in the country... or roam around in the prairies out by Marshall... from the middle of nowhere, to the center of the state, Minnesota is a nice place to visit!

Hopefully this information has helped you out, and has gotten to you in time.

Default Here On Earth movie and Welch Village

Hi Ellen,
Just saw your posting and I don't know if you've already visited this area but I'm familar with both the movie "Here On Earth" and also the shooting location right in Welch Village. Welch Village is a small town halfway between Cannon Falls, MN and Red Wing, MN. It is on the Cannon River bike trail and on the bike trail it is 10 miles from either Cannon Falls or Red Wing. I suggest you rent a bike in either Cannon Falls or Red Wing and ride the trail to Welch Village. There is a very nice cafe there that used to have pictures of the Here on Earth movie on the walls. We were there this spring though and the posters weren't there. The movie was shot in the "town square" and you'll recognize it even though they did have some false fronts up while shooting the movie. If you can decide between starting in Cannon Falls or Red Wing I'd recommend starting in Red Wing. There's a bike shop just across the street from where the bike trail begins (just west of the old Pottery Factory).
