I have been looking into moving to Tunica County to teach. What is the area like for living? I have been there to gamble but that is different than living there. We will be needing somewhere to live, are the houses to rent? If we like it then we will look into buying later, are there houses to buy? I am wanting to stay more towards Memphis, my husband will be looking for work there or in Southaven. What can you tell me about some type of daycare or preschool. My daughter is 3 and a half. Which school is considered the best the work at? I just graduated so this would be my first job, I just want to make sure that I am not getting in over my head. Are the schools bad?

Hernando is a nice place to live and is roughly between Tunica and Southaven.

From what Ive been told, the schools are similar to most Delta schools, but they do have more money because of the casinos.

I would live in Hernando if I were you. Regarding the schools, Rosa Fort High School is pretty rough. I had a van broken into and cell phone stolen while on campus repairing computers, and my daughter goes there when her school plays them in football (she is in band at Senatobia High), and she said the environment is pretty rowdy. I always got the feeling I needed to pay attention to my surroundings closely.

I have spent some time in the lower schools as well, and while I did not feel it was an unsafe environment, I did feel like the system was substandard.

I had a family member do some student teaching in Tunica last year. She was extremely disappointed in the parental participation and that showed in the students. Since the parents don't care, it shows in the kids and ultimately in the scores. From what I hear it is typical all along the MS River delta.

Be warned that the state is in a budget crunch and a lot of teaching positions have been eliminated.

Finally, Hernando is the best bet on where to live if your husband gets work in Southaven. He will have many more opportunities in Desoto county compared to Tunica county.

Many of the casino folks do live in Desoto County. It is about a 25 minute drive from Hernando to the casinos.
I know nothing about the schools but one advantage of living in Tunica County is no property taxes & I hear you only pay the registration fee for car tags. No sure of the residence requirement.

I am going to try for the lower grades. I have tried to find reviews for any of the schools and the high school is the only one I can find and they are ALL bad. Does anyone on here have kids that go to the schools there or maybe you teach there. I can't find a single teacher from the Tunica schools. Another thing are there any white teachers at these schools? Just asking nothing against anyone.

I was thinking maybe living in Southaven. We are a married mixed coupls (black/white) and I want to neighbors that are not going to cause us problems. No I am not saying that it will happen but were we will in MS now still has issues with it, I just don't want to jump into an area and not know anything around us. I do thany all of you for your replies. What about daycare or preschools in desoto county? We are sure we want to rent before buying, so what about areas to live apts or houses?

I think you will find DeSoto County to look quite similar to newly developing suburban areas all over the country. It's also quite diverse. There is an area with hundreds of apartments just west of the DeSoto Civic Center arena, roughly near the intersection of Church Rd. and Hwy 51. The branch location of the community college and state universities is also right in that area.

Tunica only has one public high school, Rosa Fort, and despite millions of dollars pumped into it from casino revenue, it is still a failing school. The elementary schools are Tunica Elementary, Robinsonville Elementary, and Dundee Elementary. I think they are all pretty bad, but Robinsonville might be okay. Rosa Fort and Robinsonville have nice modern buildings. Tunica Elementary is in a pretty building that used to be the Agricultural High School before desegregation. There's a private school, Tunica Academy, that has less than 200 students. Rosa Fort is almost entirely black. I think it's actually like 98% black, while Tunica Academy is probably 80% white. 10 years ago it was nearly 100% white with some Hispanics, but it's pretty mixed now. There are white teachers at Rosa Fort, though, just not many white students.

No one would give you any problems to your face about being a mixed couple in Tunica. They will most certainly talk about you behind your back and you will have some difficulties fitting in. Plus the housing in Tunica is pretty limited at the moment. You'd do better in Southaven. Also you can send your kids to Desoto County schools rather than Tunica. I'm sorry, but I would never encourage someone to put a child in a Tunica County public school.

I love these comments. These are in the "Mississippi" part of the forum. Anyone, who has their eyes open, knows these comments are applicable NATIONWIDE, different names of places and things, SAME SITUATION. Whites have their own schools all over America. All over America, you will find the worst parents, and worst schools are black.
