My wife and I are getting kinda curious about Missoula as well. Grown so tired of LA/SF people destroying our hometown in Oregon and really need a change from the damp winters. I can take the relentless gray if it's a drier air. I lived in Fairbanks for a couple winters back in my mid-20s so I'm sure the cold is tolerable by comparison! Plus my wife has family in Montana and was nearly born there, so we're thinking of making a couple visits this fall and coming spring to explore the area and feel it out.

What are the national forest areas like around Missoula? As long as I have mountains, big critters, and big trees I'm pretty content.

I can remember back in 1991 when there was a huge migration of California transplants all headed to Oregon, Washington and Arizona. Now Oregon and Washington are both messed up from that.

Sunny, partly sunny, mostly cloudy in January

You can check other months and other cities. Missoula is on low end of winter sun scale.

Many other places in MT are sunny in winter, stormy then sun comes out--that is not Missoula, or not Polson.
What about the Bitteroot Valley? Does it stay pretty gloomy during the winter compared to Missoula?

The Bitterroot Valley pretty much has the same weather as Missoula.
