In the school district we are in, we are about 10 miles from the schools. We are right on the district border, and our neighboring district has schools 3-4 miles from our home, right on our paths to work. The schools in the district we are in now, is in the complete opposite direction. Neither district is better or worse than the other, IMO.

We don't have kids now, but hypothetically if we did, we would ideally want to be in the school district that is closer to home. It would reduce the need to send kids off on a bus, and make it easier for the kids to participate in extracurricular activities. If and when the time comes, how could we go about trying to get into the neighboring district? Is this relatively simple, or would it be an expensive and time-consuming battle? I have heard of people doing this, but know nothing about it.

I think your best bet would be to contact the school district. The only way I know to do it is to use the address of a friend or relative who lives within the school district you want your future children to attend. There might be other ways, but city/county laws and district policies vary a great deal across the state.

A friend of mine tried using her mother's address for this reason, but got found out when her child was learning to write and they had to write their name, address and phone number down. He told the teacher his real address, and when they started investigating...she ended up moving to a new house so her child could stay in the same school.
Sometimes you can pay a fee to have your child attend a different school. But it is expensive and will have to be paid every semester, forever.
