I am currently working on a project pertaining to Timber rattlesnakes. I am interested in interviewing individuals that have been bitten by these snakes, or that have participated in contests from the 50's and 60's where these snakes were killed. I am also interested in hearing any stories pertaining to these snakes. I can be contacted at MOpiggys@aol.com or Shelly.cox@mdc.mo.gov

I was bitten by one approx. 33 yrs. ago. It was August and I was walking through a pasture in Howard County, never saw it. Physician at the emergency room measured the fang width to determine the species. It didn't release any venome and thus no reaction though the hospital kept me overnight for observation. I was told that August is when they shed their skin and the outerlayer of their eye with it. That they will strike at anything warmer that they think is a threat just to scare it away.

Default I have quite a few around here.

Half dozen encounters a year at least. Here's one beside my driveway:

Never been bitten by any poisonous snakes. Copperheads are more numerous and more aggressive around here.

Chadwick, MO had an annual rattlesnake hunt years ago. I remember going once when I was a teen (sometimes in the 70's) and seeing the pen where they had them placed after being judged. Some fool was in the pen milking them (yes in the pen with a large number of very annoyed rattlers) and I believe they were sold to someone in Texas in the food industry after the festival. But I was not part of the hunt so what happened to the snakes afterwards could have been a mere rumor - or my old brain is filling in memory gaps with nonsense.

They haven't held it for many years so that little bit of not much information is all I can offer.
