What do you mean by suburbs? There aren't really suburbs of Columbia like Chicago or large cities have. Do you mean small towns like Boonville, Moberly, and Ashland? If you drive outside of Columbia, you are in the sticks.

Is there any way you can visit before moving? It may give you a nice perspective of the areas of town.

Out of the smaller towns that are on the out skirts of Columbia which do you recommend raising a family in? I hope we can visit before we move but I don't know if we can. Thank you for your help.

How far are you willing to drive?

Off the top of my head, here's a list of towns and their distance from Columbia:
Centralia - 35mins
Fulton - 30mins
Boonville - 25mins
Hallsville - 25mins
Ashland - 20mins

They are all really small towns, so for most shopping, you will have to drive to Columbia. Fulton and Boonville are probably the largest listed and will have more housing available, although probably very few rentals.
