Moved to Missouri to be close to daughter in my aging years. Moved here from Arizona. So sorry I did. Missouri is very windy all the time. Most of all taxes are very high. Maybe not compared to West coast or East coast. Everything seems high here. No tax breaks for seniors. Missouri taxes everything. Depending on what county you live in you may be double taxed by city and county. Wish I'd never moved here.

Won’t argue with you about taxes being high, but food is not subject to STATE income tax but is taxed with all the county and local add-ons. Of course, all that could have been researched prior to your move.

I don’t consider Missouri particularly windy. Don’t move to Oklahoma. That’s windy.

Missouri looks to have a lower tax burden overall than Arizona, but I suppose it depends on personal circumstances as well.
I've never known it to be a high-tax state. Property taxes are middle-to-low, and income taxes are on the low end.
Sales taxes vary by city and county. People sometimes complain about the sales taxes, but they're not nearly enough to make it as burdensome overall as many other states.
Housing is also going to be cheaper than Arizona on average.

As for the wind, it just depends on where you're at really. Southern/southeastern MO isn't as windy as say, the northwest part of the state.

Sorry to hear the OP is having a hard time, but Missouri actually makes many top 5 lists for affordability for seniors on fixed incomes.

As someone that is approaching retirement age in less than a decade, I've been researching the best states where I can live after I retire. MO actually appears to look pretty good if you are earning a modest amount of money from a part time job and deriving income from retirement accounts, Socialist Security and savings. They do offer some tax breaks for seniors as outlined in the links below.

You may want to look into Kentucky also since that is a pretty good state for retirees. Much depends upon your income level after retirement. Some states are friendlier for people at certain income levels than others.

If you are past 60, you can get your real estate taxes refunded.

I live in Missouri. You just go on line and fill out a form.

"Does Missouri have property tax relief for seniors?
The Missouri Property Tax Credit Claim gives credit to certain senior citizens and 100 percent disabled individuals for a portion of the real estate taxes or rent they have paid for the year. The credit is for a maximum of $750 for renters and $1,100 for owners who owned and occupied their home."

Our home is valued at $120,000 and taxes were $320.

I lived in Missouri for 4 years. Then I moved back to New Mexico. The desert, during February and March, is going to be way, way worse than anything I ever experienced in Missouri. Last week portions of Arizona were hit with wind gusts of 75 mph. A tree in my back yard fell down. I think you might have blocked out how windy late winter and spring is in the desert.

Wait till this summer. There'll be no wind at all.
