The director of the Missouri Department of Transportation set a trial balloon afloat this week. Missourinet, the statewide radio network, reported on his proposal of a Vehicle Miles Traveled (http://www.missourinet.com/gestalt/go.cfm?objectid=F6B3988E-5056-B82A-378B39571AEA55EC - broken link) tax.

That will be a new kind of tax to add to this list: Tax Everything.

Also, the Rolla City Council is getting ready to raise the fees at the cemetery (http://www.therolladailynews.com/news/x497800121/Cemetery-fees-likely-to-rise - broken link). I can't afford to die now; this will really put death out of my price range.

How else would you suggest paying for the hundreds of thousands of miles of road that people demand?

The vehicle miles traveled tax will never happen. People will again demand the appropriate funds to be used for their intended purposes, and not deferred to other areas like they have in the past. Next thing you know people will be bringing up the toll road scenario again. That's not going to happen either.

If you don't like taxes, you could always do something unheard of, and not pay them. Sure you'll get letters from the State and Federal Government about it, but it is your personal choice to pay taxes. That or you could move to a country that is tax free. Probably not going to enjoy that lifestyle too much. Eating, bathing, having clean water to drink, and other essentials are not requirements in tax free countries.

If you can't afford an extra $55 for burial, then perhaps you should look in the mirror and ask yourself why you squandered away all of your money, or why you don't have a good life insurance plan?

Certainly not by violating my privacy by requiring a tracking or recording device on my car or mandating periodic odometer checks by government outside of changes of ownership. That would only be the first step towards limiting our freedom of movement.

Oh, and to answer your question directly, how about by spending the money we're already taxed wisely and for the purposes for which it's supposedly intended.

Isn't the fuel tax supposed to do that?

Have you ever known any government to do away with a form of revenue? Toll roads are a reasonable option but my best guess is that if they imposed them there would still be a gas tax.

Why collect only once for something if you can do it twice?
