Ssince Missouri relaxed its gun laws more people have been killed by guns. Surprising? Not at all.

I'm not taking a side either way, but there are too many variables to use MO as the end all be all. Chicago has very tight gun restrictions and their gun crime keeps escalating. NY Times ran a story with a narrative in mind and that's how they typically do things.

The city of Chicago borders Indiana, and Chicago's suburbs also sprawl into Wisconsin. Chicago could have the toughest gun laws in the country, but guns will continue to pour in from states in the metro with far laxer gun laws than the city.

Basically, you just made my point. There are a ton of variables and you can't just look at gun laws and then say "there's the reason!" MO borders Oklahoma and Kentucky, two of the most lenient gun law states in the USA, so I guess the same rule could apply.

Missouri actually is a better state to make a comparison, even with the variables, because it changed its own laws. That makes looking at the state before and after the change much easier, even if border states had lax laws to begin with.

Also, regarding those border states, it's not the same as the situation in Chicagoland. Neither of those states border metro St. Louis or Kansas City in the same way. Not saying guns aren't coming in from those states, but it's a lot harder to get them where they need to go, unlike what's occurring in Chicago.

The problem driving gun crime stats is the same in St. Louis, Chicago or, as shown in this video, Milwaukee:

Watchdog Update - Video from sentencing shows guns, threats against police

About 60% of all gun deaths are suicide. Those people will find another way. Population changes can make a difference too. Nationwide, gun homicides deaths are 2.9 per 100,000 among whites, 16 per 100,000 among blacks. Missouri's black population is growing a lot faster than the white population.

Default Two things

There are two things at play here that make a difference. No.1 is the media headline (true or false) that raises advertising dollars. No. 2 is the very good chance no one in the NYT office or staff ever set foot in Illinois or Chicago. No 3. comparing the laws of one state to crime in one city in another is more than foolish. It is udder-ly idiotic.

City cops may spend a lifetime trying to do the right thing. but vigorish is alive and well in Illinois. Until it is stopped, there still will be little chang since Capone.

Gun homicide rates have dropped every year since 1993 in the US.
