Sorry to see that you haven't had any responses and wish I could help you out. The only thing I can tell you is that it appears the closest airports are St. Louis, MO and Paducah, KY.
As for SEMO, I had one former student that went there and loved it, said campus life was really enjoyable. It has a great reputation; it's just not as well known and attended as MSU in Springfield (formerly SouthWest MO State), thus may be the reason for lack of responses...

First of all, congratulations on a GREAT choice for a college! I went to SEMO for a year and loved every minute of my time there. The professors are very friendly and willing to work with students on a 1-1 basis if need be, and the campus is spaced out enough to be spacious but also close enough to be cozy. Watch out for Cardiac Hill in the winter, though!! It will definitely get you...
Cape is a GREAT place to live. The nightlife is wonderful, there are great parks nearby for nature lovers, and the city itself is absolutely gorgeous all year round, especially in the fall. The mall there isn't too bad for light shoppers, and if you can't find something you like to eat out of all the restaurants in town, it sounds like a personal problem. LOL
The nearest airport to get a flight to Chicago is the STL airport... Cape used to have a small airport but they no longer do commercial flights, I don't believe... (According to my dad, anyway...)

We don't seem to have many regular posters here from Southeast Missouri. In my few visits to that part of the State (down in the Bootheel) I can say this: 1)there is excellent BBQ in many of the small towns (gotta try Strawberry's midtown in Holcomb), 2) the mosquitos in rice country are unbearable, and 3)the dove hunting is great.

I lived in Cape Girardeau from 1996 to 2001. I also attended SEMO during that time and had a great time too! There are several great BBQ restaurants in the area. I can't remember the name of the one in Jackson, MO but I think it is on Hwy 61. Dexter's BBQ is really good. You'll have a great grocery store there, which is Schnucks. They have a great selection of food to cater to all the different folks who come to Cape for SEMO. They also have a terrific wine, beer, and liquer selection too. They are a St. Louis based grocery chain and carry some all the same things you would find at the St. Louis stores like Fitz Root Beer and Cream soda's. Cape also has an Imo's Pizza which was probably the reason I gained so much weight while I lived there. Cape also has a bunch of chain restaurants and a few good independent restaurants. There is a wonderful coffee and tea shop near campus called A Touch of Grace. Back when I lived there, my best friend/roommate was head barista there and I can tell you that I haven't had a better cup of tea since I went there. As far as airports go, I took one flight out of Cape to St. Louis once on a really scarry small plane that held about 12 people total, so I would recommend driving to Lambert Airport in St. Louis. Skk, are you from Chicago? Just curious, I used to live in Oak Park for a short while. I still drive through Cape every once in a while on my way to see my folks up in Ste. Genevieve County. I noticed Cafe Cape closed some time ago. Too bad, I had a lot of fond late night memories in that place. Please post here if you have any questions that I might be able to answer. I hope your education at SEMO will be as enjoyable as mine was!

My family and I live in a rural community just South of Cape Girardeau. We love it here!!!!!

We had moved up from Matthews, which is just a 35-40 min drive South of Cape. We searched for over 7 yrs to find "Our dream home". My hubby has worked in the Cape area for many years, but finding affordable, nice housing in the country proved to be a bit of an issue. I suggest you either stay in the dorms, or if you have a car get something in a smaller more rural community. The rent in Cape can be killer!!!! Crime isn't severe, but drugs are. But where, now adays isn't!!!!

My daughter will be going to SEMO next fall. She is really excited as I am sure you will be too. In my opinion it is fairly easy to make friends here in Cape, most people are friendly and helpful to others. Not like you might see in a larger city.

We have loads of places to eat with new places popping up what seems like monthly. The riverfront is coming alive again with a lot of mom and pop stores and restaurants. I swear that the best place to have pasta is on the riverfront. And very reasonablly priced I might add.

Good luck to you with your future.

Yes, it is. I love that place!!!!! Umm, Yummy stuff, generous portions and not pricy at all!!!!

If ever in Cape you must eat there. Downtown eating is the best the city has to offer, in my opinion!!!!!

That is a bit odd, Matthews is such a tiny town. We still own a home there, hubby wants to sell, I wish we could hold onto. It is a sentimental thing. We raised our children in that home, we remolded it ourselves and I just miss it terribly.

Do you still have family there??? We will be there this evening taking a few of our sons friends home after they spent the night.

Don't miss the misquotes though!!!! Pesky little buggers!!!!
