Rebranded B&H Piggly Wiggly hosting grand reopening in Mobile March 13 | al.com

After more than 65 years, Cain’s B&H Food Store in Mobile is getting a new look and name, complete with a grand re-opening slated for Wednesday, March 13.

“The store has gone through a complete renovation, to make the shopping experience more in line with our other stores,” said Tommy Cain, who is also owner of Cain’s Piggly Wiggly stores in Fairhope, Loxley and Foley.
The Mobile location at 2204 Halls Mill Road will now be called B&H Piggly Wiggly and will adopt the pricing strategy of the other stores owned by the Cain family: Cost plus 10 percent.

“Being local and understanding what our customers want is what makes us different from the national stores,” Cain said.

The Cain grocery empire began in the 1930s with Tommy Cain’s uncles, joined later by his father, Leon. Tommy Cain joined the family business in 1965, and opened Cain’s Grocery in Loxley in 1989. The family-owned chain is one of the few remaining locally owned grocers in Mobile and Baldwin counties.

In 2001, Tommy Cain bought B&H Food Store in Mobile – opened originally by Leon Cain in the 1960s as an IGA location and later sold to the B&H Group – and renamed it Cain’s B&H Food Store.

Have the Bruno's and Food World stores in Mobile been changed over to Belle Foods yet? I know they're supposed to be, but not sure when.

They bought our Food World here in Atmore and I can say its much improved.

I was in the Bruno's/Belle Foods store about a week ago. They are still in transition. Some in-store signs were Belle, some still Bruno's.

Has anybody been to the new B&H Piggly Wiggly? It's not too far from me, and until Publix opens up nearby, I'd be glad to try something other than the Wal Mart Neighborhood Market, which I find depressing.

Did you know that John Edd Thompson worked at the B&H in the early 60s as a bagboy?

No, I didn't! I'll have to mention this the next time we see him. (He and my husband were colleagues for decades until his retirement...)
