Don't know if that kills the stadium, but the City Council isn't going to fund it.

It wont kill the stadium. South will still build it. The downside is that the city will loose out. Senior Bowl will leave either for south (once it is built) or for another city. The other bowl games will most likely leave too. Leaving the city of Mobile with a big stadium and no use. Plus, we wont have any money to go towards re-purposing it.

The city council really just made a bad problem worst. This is another example of Mobile government shooting itself in the foot.

The university doesn't NEED the money to build the stadium.

Why should the city contribute millions of dollars to send the Senior Bowl to West Mobile?
Downtown Mobile businesses rely on this income each year. If the game is moved to the South campus, nobody will be staying in downtown hotels or eating at downtown restaurants.

If the city DID provide South with the money, what would we be left with?
A newly painted Ladd Stadium?
You can only polish a turd so much, but at the end of the day it's still a turd.

What I believe should have happened is that the city should have contributed even more money to the project and created a partnership with South to build the new stadium where Ladd stands today.

For once I agree with the Council.South has plenty of money they don't need funding from the city to build it. It will be built anyway. I would rather see Ladd rebuilt at the Hank Location tbh.

South had offered to give the city $2.5m to go towards redoing the stands for use for high school football games. That offer was reliant on the city agreeing to give USA $500k/year for 10 years. I find it hard to believe that the 5 home games for South and two bowl games have as large of an impact as Mardi Gras, the cruise industry downtown, or the multiple conventions held at the convention center every year. Plus, even if "no one would be staying in downtown hotels or eating downtown", this idea is a moot point because USA wasn't completely reliant on funding from the city/county. You even stated this yourself in your first sentence. It'll just take a little bit longer for USA to line up the funding it needs now.

South Alabama will build at least a version of the stadium they had planned. The failure of the city to commit to it puts some of the amenities at risk. The city was going to pay $500 grand a year for 20 years and get use of the facility rent free permanently. Then they were going to get a 2.5 million dollar check to help with Ladd repurposing. Now they're going to have to pay for a stadium that will have no income and still whatever South charges for the bowl games. This ends up costing the city a lot more than it should. Complete blunder by the council.

Venues are at least half of the attraction to live events, if not more. If people cared about just wins and losses they would stay at home and watch it on tv or computer. Majority of the people at sporting events are there to enjoy themselves. It's ALL about fan experience and Mobile continues to fall flat on it's face when it comes to that. Mobile isn't a bad sports town because of the people, its the horrible venues. We finally have an opportunity to get a modern venue in the city and get some money to help Ladd and the council balks. Embarrassing.

OK, it's good to hear that the USA stadium is not dead.

Pardon my ignorance of the area, but is West Mobile a separate entity, or just a section of Mobile?

South is going to build their stadium....it's the city that shot themselves in the foot since they lost out on an opportunity for South to dig them out of the crater that Ladd and other failing, crumbling venues are creating with their lack of usage and rising maintenance costs. Putting a right-sized stadium in Ladd's place would have more benefit and be a better overall venue for the schools that use it for their athletic programs.

It's all the city of Mobile, it's just thought of as two entities. When people think of Mobile, they are thinking east 65.
