Route 212. It looks like it runs from Billings to the park. It runs right through Cooke City.

Route 212 into Red Lodge and then South on the Beartooth National Scenic Byway (the official name still 212).

Plan on at least a couple of hours to 4 hours depending on how many stops you make to explore the country side. I wouldn't worry too much about wanting to move to Cooke City, but I would worry more about Red Lodge & Jackson Hole. If you need to you can remember that for many month every year access to Cooke City is limited to snowmobile's. It is also the only town in MT that is only accessible by traveling through a different state (WY) unless you hike into it.

There is supposed to be some town up by the great lakes in the U.S. where the only access is from Canada.

Default car rental

Make sure the car you rent is able to go to that altitude. We went a few years ago and the vehicle we had vapor locked and had to sit an hour before we could start it again. This would only be a worry if you plan on stopping and starting a few times.

When I was in Denver renting a car they ask me where I am going with it,mentioned "up in the mountains"

OK then you need a 6 or 8 cylinder vehicle not a 4 cylinder.

If you're planning on driving the Beartooth in April or early May, you'll be out of luck. The earliest the road opens is Memorial Day and that depends on the weather/road conditions.
