Ok, I know this is last minute, but I really need some time in/around Mountains. I lived in Missoula for 8 years, but would like to visit a place where I could put together a weekend get-away that wouldn't be too complicated. Maybe around Gardner or Cooke City. I've hiked in the Beartooths, but have always been apart of a tour group. I just want to see Mountains. Thanks for your suggestions. I know it's not a smart or easy plan given the time frame and Holiday. I plan to use credit card points to pay for the flight.

Get your rental car arrangements in place now. It will be jammed.

I would suggest calling right now & try getting a room with Murphy bed at Rock Creek Resort by Red Lodge & using it as base for your trip. Ask for a room along the creek.

Take scenic drive loops including Beartooth highway & one day at the Park if possible.
Spend a whole day at Cody--an excellent museum, Sierra trading post has an outlet, go to the Buffalo Bill historic Irma hotel for a meal & and there is always a daily short night rodeo at Cody too.

If you can get accommodations in Red Lodge or Cooke City and fly in to Cody or Billings that sounds better to me than Gardner via Bozeman.

Dayhiking around and perhaps above entry Beartooth lakes sounds better to me than venturing into the heart of Yellowstone, especially on that weekend.

Thanks for the help. I don't think July 4th is a good choice for an easy get-away.

If you're looking at Gardiner or Cooke City consider going to Livingston to the rodeo and nightlife on the 4th of July weekend. It's a blast that time of year.

I've never been to that one. I've heard it was fun.
