I think areas around Boise, Idaho would be the key.

At least that's what they'd like for you to believe.

As wind is an important factor to you, the important question is what is maximum wind speed do you feel would be acceptable?

Without that there is no way one can answer your question. The wind speed in some locations will quite often reach 20 mph, 40 mph, 60 mph, and even occasionally 100 mph in some locations. So give us your upper limit, and we will know if an area would or would not be something for you to consider.

Windy places in south central Montana:

-Livingston, MT
-Paradise Valley
-Shields River Valley
-Some very cheap lots up in the hills outside of White Sulphur Springs (they're also claiming year-round access, when they get 10 foot snowdrifts out there)
-Raynold's Pass, MT

Montana is very windy.

I would look into Helena, MT. We don't have a bunch of wind, most days the wind will be less than 5 mph. When it does get windy, it is usually at the beginning of a front, and last about a day. We have a hospital in town, with life flight service to Salt Lake/Denver/Spokane/Seattle for major problems.

There is tons of affordable real estate in the North Valley. You can easily purchase 2 plus acres, a house, and at least a large garage for 200k to 250k. The real estate is taking a hit right now due to school overcrowding, but I am assuming you don't have small children based on your response. I just looked at a home with 10 acres, a large shop, 4 bed 2 bath, for 217K. Check out Realtor.com.

Helena has a stable economy based on the state and federal government. We have all of the major chain stores, plus a Costco.

How long has Helena had a Costco? Is the mall still around? I haven't been to Helena in years.
