I have an off-the-wall question. I have always wanted to work on a ranch/being a female probably in an office environment, but here is the problem--I have children. Does anyone know of a ranch that would not only hire me but allow me to bring my children?? I have always loved Montana but Wyoming or somewhere else would be nice also.

It would depend on how old your kids are. Farm/ranch work is not the average 8-5 job and it is outside work for the most part. If your kids are young, you would need to ask yourself if you want them around dangerous machines and equipment. Are you from Montana or Wyoming? If not, the winters can be a bit brutal to someone used to working indoors. Calving season is not for the faint of heart, especially on the eastern side of Montana. Are you able to leave your children for hours upon hours in the middle of the night to check herds, assist delivery, warm frozen calves? If not, ranching is not for you. You didn't say if you were single. Honestly, I would second guess myself before hiring a single mother for my ranch hand/manager. I'm not trying to sound sexist or anything like that, I would just have to consider my ranch and cattle best interests. You might try some of the larger horse operations like Paws UP in Potomac.

Not much if any office environments on a real ranch, maybe something for some dude ranch... but I guess it depends on your definition.

Yes, it's really interesting how popular dude ranch vacations are in Europe. And some of those European "dudes" really know their stuff--they've taken horseback lessons before showing up, they know about Western lore, and some of them even take part in Old West reenactments/festivals in their home countries. Over the top? Well, they, too, have always wanted to live the cowboy life...and some of the cowboys back in the day had European accents, too! The dream is alive...
There's a dude ranch in Libby that seems to be offering a really authentic work environment:
The Ranch at McGinnis Meadows Cattle & Guest Ranch in Northwest Montana . I haven't been there yet, but I know the area, which is really breathtaking. Who knows, that might be a place for you to start your search? Good luck!

Yeah, I am a single mother and would only have my two younger children with me 8 and 12. I am a hard worker plus I have a college education. Cold winters I can handle (I am in IL now). My kids could even help out if necessary. I do appreciate your insight and thoughts! Thanks.
