Looking for former mining town
My grandfather grew up in a mining town in MT named Wren. My mom would like to visit but Wren no longer exists. Does anyone know where it was located? Thanks for your help!

Do you think the name of the town could have been something else that sounded like Wren? I searched online for Montana ghost towns and noticed Laurin in Madison County to the east of Sheridan on Highway 287. I guess one flaw in my sounds-like theory is the fact that one source says the local people call this place la-ray; I thought maybe they called it la-ren!

Wren's Nest?
I too was born and raised in Montana (Butte) but I have never heard of a mining town in Montana named Wren. There is however a mining site in England that is similar. It is Wren's Nest. Wren's Nest is a National Nature Reserve just outside the town of Dudley, UK. The site has some historical mining significance along with other attributes. Could this have been where your Grandfather was born?

I haven't ever heard of it either.
Phoned up an older cousin in Phillipsburg and ask him, he doesn't recall either.
I do know where Warland is though.
Could it possibly be Ural, Hayden, Tweed, Valcour, Yarnell, Jennings, Rondo, or Stonehill?.
Just thought to ask.

Hi Amanda:
Email or call the Montana Historical Society at mhslibrary@mt.gov or (406) 444-2694. They are knowledgeable and helpful. Some towns have changed their names and the MT HS would know about these. Perhaps what was once"Wren" was changed to a different name. Also, a previous post mentioned Laurin (pronounced la-ray), originally called Cicero as a possibility, since if mispronounced could be construed as rhyming with "wren". It was a trading town for the miners of Alder Gulch. Family that never lived there might not be aware of the correct pronunciation and that could have lead to the "Wren".
Here is a link to info on Laurin with a brief history and mention of some early families.
Ruby Valley.com/Laurin website
Good luck with your search.
