Thanks everyone. I agree that location is key, as are good schools. Thanks for the map!
The northern communities are a bit too isolated for me because of my need to do field placements as part of my masters degree. I think SLO area might be the best in terms of that.
I might retire in Gualala one day though.

And yes, the gang issues are a major concern of mine. The safety of SLO county is a major deciding factor. I've heard good things about San Luis Coastal district though.
