I guess maybe I was mixing up "fast" driving and "aggressive" driving.
Well, considering how dense the city is, driving “fast” isn’t much of an option. But it is definitely up there with NYC when it comes to being one of the cities with the most aggressive drivers in NA.
Montrealers do drive on the faster side generally. there are still many who keep to the speed limit, keep distance from the car in the front, etc. I think there is a fair amout of reckless driving but its limited to maybe 30% of the drivers.
One note about the metro:
During rush hours when metro passengers are at full capacity, people are horrible at making a full use of space in the subway train. There is always some room on the inside portion of the train but people don't make space for other passengers and also the ones who didn't make it on board don't bother getting on. I was born in a metro area of 25 million people. Over there, we make space by pushing into the ones who are not making space for us inside the train. It's not rude or anything. It's just a part of daily life. If you did that in Montreal, you'll get frowned upon and many are just happy to take the next train. In this sense, Montrealers still value having space than getting somewhere earlier.
But maybe this is just an Asian vs Western cultural difference. Westerners tend to have this sense of entitlement "This is the bare minimum condition I am willing to let myself go through." while in Asia we kinda don't have that notion.
