Morgantown is now the third most populace city in the state (replacing Parkersburg who is now #4), and the only city in the top 5 that gained population over the last year.
Morgantown gained 147 people over the last year.
Wheeling lost 273 people over the last year.
Parkersburg lost 390 people over the last year.
Huntington lost 525 people over the last year.
Charleston lost 598 people over the last year.
And we finally know that the population numbers do NOT include students unless they establish residency. The way they establish residency is by filing a federal tax return with the address they live at in Morgantown or Huntington (according to later in the article). Anyone living in WVU or MU owned housing is not counted in population totals.
"Students at West Virginia University and Marshall University are not counted as part of the estimates unless they choose to establish residency in Morgantown and Huntington, according to the U.S. Census Bureau" -
I emailed the owner of the new Asian Grill restaurant being built in the new shopping center across from The Suncrest Town Center. I asked what the general idea behind this place would be and when it would be open (essentially is it something new or just another Chinese restaurant) and here is his response. Apparently the owner of this also owns the Japanese Fusion restaurant being built across from the baseball stadium.
"Oryza is an Asian themed "build your own" fast casual model similar to other well known "build your own" national brands that you probably recognize, where you will be able to customize your own Rice Bowls, Salads, and Wraps, with Asian inspired sauces and toppings.
The opening in Suncrest will be in the fall, a little behind the other businesses opening in that center, since part of our group is currently focused on the opening of Fusion Steakhouse this summer in Morgantown at University Town Center."

As a fan of asian food I'm really glad to have so many new and existing options in town. The above mentioned restaurant in addition to Siagon Pho and the other new Pho restaurant in Westover along with the new asian restaurant on Burroughs are nice additions. We already have two great Thai restaurants in Chaang Thai and Ta-Khrai in evansdale. Lavender Cafe and Yama are also nice. Ive boycotted Ogawa and Peking House. In not a buffet guy either so I could do without these super no 1 buffets and evergreen types of places. Their food sucks.
It looks as though some serious attention is going to be paid regarding development of the Wharf District, and tying that in with the Downtown area. There is a huge potential for both.

Population numbers have never included students unless they have established residency- why should they? They arent actual residents.
Good job to Morgantown though for not losing population- even though 147 people isn't much it is still a positive number compared to the rest of West Virginia and hopefully they can keep the momentum going!

County gained a bunch more if I remember correctly.
Regarding student numbers, there has been a bunch of back and forth (not as much on here) over if the student numbers were included or not. Makes sense they are not included.
