"save hundreds of lives a year" sounds like more nanny-state bullchit. Most new bikes already come with ABS. I oppose making them mandatory. I expect non-ABS bikes will largely go by the wayside as new models come out. It doesn't take DC to make that happen-or to take models off our dealership floor before manufacturers can accommodate this on all models. Others, especially "enduro" or "dual sport" bikes are made less-safe with ABS on dirt surfaces, where locking a tire can be a method of turning or controlling the bike.
Except that, in many places, you need a plate on your dirt bike to connect trails.
If I was to consider a dual sport I would ideally look for a bike with ABS which could be switched on and off. Most of the big adventure bikes have this and I imagine it will eventually be included with the 250cc class bikes as well.

No one wants the weight of ABS on a dirt bike. They just need a plate to legally ride on a few miles of dirt road here and there to connect trails. All of the two strokes are still carbed, if that's any indication of technology acceptance dirt bikes. And yes, you can plate a two stroke, in many states.
If ABS becomes mandatory for street legal bikes, then of course the greenie's will just use this as an excuse to stop issuing plates for dirt bikes, hence limiting our riding areas even more. **** that!

Dirt bikes are around the same HP as that BMW, but 1/2 the weight, lower gearing, twice the suspension travel, and about 20 times more maintenance.
Engine/suspension rebuilds every 100 hours, rear tire every 20 hours. Wheel bearings every 40 hours etc. Air filter, every ride. For every hour I ride, I spend another hour in the garage.
Dual sport bikes have their place and they are way better on the road, but a 400+ lb bike can't hang with a 220lb bike on technical terrain.
Touche and I think we're on the same page here. I don't want any added restrictions to your dirt bikes. I just recognize and appreciate the safety benefits of ABS, and when I'm riding on the street I want all possible tools at my disposal to prevent distracted cagers from killing me.
