Besides what has been already mentioned, I can only think of Deep Impact which I really enjoyed. Seeing a 1000' tidal wave coming at you at a few hundred miles an hour is a pretty messed up way to check out!
The Day After scared the bejeezus out of me. I couldn't sleep for three or four nights after watching that. It was pretty gutsy of ABC to air such an intense and bleak movie -- it was and still is so un-network like.
Another TV disaster movie I like is Special Bulletin, which was more of a satire of modern TV news, and the disaster doesn't come along until the very end of the movie. It was kinda campy, too; the satire wasn't very subtle.
Crack in the World is an oldie but goodie. It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature ...

I'd love to see The Day of the Triffids miniseries aired by BBC in 2009, but so far they've only released THAT on a non-USA format as well. I believe it's also been released in BluRay but not sure if all the "extras" are viewable on a non-PAL setup.
I believe I have the "Day of the Triffids" movie (early 1960s, if I remember correctly) somewhere either on DVD or VHS.

There was one from the 60s and another one done in the 80s, but the one I REALLY want to see is the latest one made in 2009. The previews are on youtube and it looks great sfx wise anyway.
War of the Worlds- With Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning, somewhat intense Independence Day- Not as good as War of the Worlds, but still fun to watch Dr. Strangelove- Didn't really have any disaster scenes but the scenario worked
On the Beach (1959) with Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner
The residents of Australia after a global nuclear war must come to terms with the fact that all life will be destroyed in a matter of months.

I've seen all 3. My favorite was the 80's BBC mini-series. The special effects in newer one weren't all that great. Though the 80's mini-series hardly had any special effects IMO still a better version. You can see the whole 80's movie on Youtube, but only in 10 minute segments,. It is set up on a playlist.
