My wife loves the movie, watches it every time it's on cable.

Oh, and it's a great movie. And a great book.
I'd say that it has some dark comedy in it, but there are some laughs. And yes, it's a tragedy, in some ways like Cool Hand Luke is also a tragedy - the tragedy being how we treat others, especially when we have power over them.....

I saw the original play off broadway and as I recall it was listed as a "Black Comedy". I was in High School as it was around 1970. The "patients" ran up and down the aisles. Scared the hell out of me.
It was the second movie ever to win the Oscar 'grand slam' for Best Picture/Director/Actor/Actress/Screenplay, following 'It Happened One Night', and a feat which was eventually matched by 'The Silence Of The Lambs'.
I never considered it a comedy since the subject matter (mental illness) isn't funny to begin with.
It was an exceptional movie nevertheless, and I was really happy that Jack Nicholson won the Best Actor Oscar that year after losing to Art Carney despite his stellar work in 'Chinatown'.
