Am I the only one who did not find this movie funny? Maybe it's because I'm 27 but I did not find it funny at all. I got bored half way. I found it moved so slow. I'd say the humor is dated. Is it just me?
I worked in a mental institution. The book had a lot of truth hidden under the storyline, although it had a type of stereotyping. The movie did as well as it could in the conversion, given the material and need to convert it into a short story. As karlsch pointed out, it has comedic moments but is not a comedy as much as allegory.
Was it supposed to be funny? I read the book and saw the movie, and found both to be tragic. Black comedy maybe? It is one of those experiences I care not to repeat. disturbing.
Never thought is a comedy either.
It is by no means 'dated' - the outfits are old, but the movie could be done today.
I saw the play a few years ago in London, with Christian Slater in the Jack Nichoson role. It was excellent! Not dated at all. And while it had some humorous moments, it was never meant to be a comedy.

Yeah, sorry, but you completely misread this movie.
