Maybe they are so driven on making 'quarterly numbers' (like the rest of corporate America) they rarely take a chance on an unproven writer or director with a new story or angle.
When I was a kid, cartoons were the place where advertisers targeting kids during commercial breaks. Then in the '80s, execs figured out that the cartoon itself could be a 22 minute commercial for their product. Hence, cartoons for G.I. Joe, Transformers, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake, Pac-Man,, etc., etc., etc.
It took movies a while to catch on to the concept, but catch on they have. Look for more stuff like this in the upcoming years. It's why Disney has stopped making movies and started making "brand infusion initiatives."
Sometimes I think the bigger problem is not only that Hollywood is out of ideas, but when they do recycle an old one, they do it terribly!
Agreed. But not only that. Consider the fact that Hollywood executives prefer to use tried formulas with a new look (CGI). This phenomena explains slate of 2014 films including "retreds": RoboCop, 300 prequel, andEndless Love. Yeah, that Endless Love.
What about the Julia Roberts, Merrell Strrep movie. Isn't that the same old mother/daughter not getting along until some cathartic event happens and all is forgiven movie?
And Lord knows there's absolutely NO explanation for that!
