It opened big because most didn't get the whole picture from the trailers. Why leave out a major part of the movie from the trailer? The rock creatures are a major part of this movie. I'm no religious fanatic but ugh it was a bit disappointing when they showed up.

Spoiler
Aside from that I didn't get how Noah and his family survived where they did when the movie started. It was like a scene from Mars. No vegetation, which to me they seemed to be vegetarians in this movie. Were they just traveling through? I don't know as it didn't go into detail but when Noah was a kid the landscape looked the same as it did when he was older and with a family.

Why did the middle kid leave when there was no one else on the Earth?

What was the smoke that made the animals go into hibernation made from? Is this another miracle God gave them?

I did see an interview with Emma who, in trying to answer all of the late night talk show hosts questions about the story and whether this or that was in the bible, said well, the story is only 2 pages in the book so the writers sort of had to fill it in. Women are barely mentioned at all. And the bible is pretty open to interpretation anyway so whatever to all that outrage.

Provides a biblical breakdown

it sounds like some people don't like it because its....real? As in it goes to dark places. If I think about, which I never really did, I suppose that leaving all those people to die was probably pretty horrific in a lot of ways. Don't see how you can get around that but I suspect that religious types prefer their rose colored glasses.

Real? Far from it.

Real as in the urban slang vernacular. By that I mean depicting complicated harsher realities about people and their actions vs. the smoothed over easier upgraded versions we typically get of bible stories that concentrate on the miracles.
Not a comment on whether the story of Noah is real.

There is a story/myth of "The Watchers". I don't recall them ever being physically described so the writer of this portrayed them as these rock creatures, fallen angels punished by being stuck/shackled to the earth, which indeed they were.
I assumed Noah and family were kind of Nomads, continually wondering and scavaging.
The middle son left, I thought, as he became the prodigal son, wandering off on his own and eventually returning to his father.
That's my take anyway.
But, it's not a good idea to dissect movies like this. I just ate my popcorn and enjoyed the show.

Glad to hear that the trailers didn't give everything away. Nothing worse, as far as I'm concerned, than going to a movie and discovering that you'd already seen everything there was to see.

Of course, in this age of info-dumping, it's almost impossible to be surprised anymore. Anyone who read any one of the numerous interviews with the director already knew about The Watchers and what they are meant to represent.
Perhaps people are still open to the idea of artistic license.

I'd like to see it, but I'm waiting for the DVD. Nothing about this made me want to pay to see it in theaters. Special effects don't wow me. Story wows me. And I pretty much know how this one goes.

Even allowing for artistic license, the rock transformers were poorly done. They looked to be an after thought and were cheaply designed and executed. Their voices were overdone and they didn't fit the overall feel of the movie. Redo the watchers or take them out completely and the movie would improve by at least 40%.
