My favorite has always been "Raging Bull".The black and white fight scenes were genius.The last fight scene ,the 6th bout between Jake LaMotta and Sugar Ray Robinson, is a classic take on what became know as the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.The referee called the fight in the 13th round because LaMotta ,even though he was unable to defend himself by this time in the fight ,seemed willing to die on his feet, taking Robinson's best shots rather than quit.
Not only Scorsese's best film, but one of the best films EVER, period.
I remember watching it when I was young, and was mesmerized by the whole movie. Back then I only liked action and horror movies and didn't like dramas at all. So that says something.
Taxi Driver never gets old no matter how many times I watch it. So many layers to it. As relevant and powerful back then as it is now and forever.
Ironically, Travis Bickle is meant to be someone that's emotionally damaged and mentally unstable, hardly your typical protagonist.
Yet, even to this day, I see his character seems to strike a chord in many people who watch the movie. They totally understand and sympathize with his sense of utter loneliness and alienation from society, especially in this internet day and age of ours today.
Any movie inspired by my favorite western, John Ford's The Searchers, can't be all bad. Bernard Herrmann's score is brilliant. Whatever false redemption Travis may have achieved, this is still a man with whom there is something deeply and horribly wrong.
Next stop Raging Bull.
