The 2016 cast does have its luminaries. Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt can stand up to 1960 Yul Brenner and Steve McQueen, time will tell with Pratt but he is on that path. Ethan Hawke and Vincent D'Onofrio are in the ball park of long and storied careers in movies and premier TV.
I think it was putting modern sensibilities into a period piece was the major problem.
Yeah. The cast was not the weak part of the remake. It had a great cast. It was just a weak script.
How about that ending? The bad guy runs his troops into the town that has been waiting for him and has lots of time to set all kinds of traps. After they predictably get slaughtered you bring out your Gatling gun and mow down the villagers. How about setting the town on fire and when people run out of the burning buildings, you mow them down with your Gatling gun.
The last 15 minutes with the totally predictable ending was a yawner. Chris Pratt gets shot 4 times in the leg, chest and everywhere else, but manages to walk 500 yards and blow up the Gatling gun. Afterwards in the "big showdown" the antagonist pulls out a hidden gun and is about to shoot Denzel and lo and behold the heroine show up and kills him with a perfectly placed shot. What a surprise. The best part was the original theme on the credits.
Could have been good with a better rewrite that gave the audiences more to think about. I'd have had the bad guys been corrupt Indian agents and US troops kicking the native americans around on a reservation trying to steal their land and gold. The Seven show up and help them eradicate their enemies and give the native americans a chance at a better life.
But... that would be too politically incorrect and Hollywood doesn't do controversy unless they get paid to.
