I only saw the first two. Don't remember Tomei being in the first.
I didn't like them overall, cause I felt we need to see more of how this Purge works and how the government is running it more. They just settle to be home invasion thrillers, and the unique ideas are left in the background in favor of home invasion thrills.

The First Purge , which Tomei is in, was released this month on July 4th. The Purge, which is the first movie released in this franchise, did not have Tomei in it. I know it’s confusing.
The Purge is really the only home invasion one in the franchise. The other three all take place out in the cities, in the open. The newest installment called The First Purge shows how it started.
Yeah sorry home invasion was the wrong term for the second one, since the invaders chase the characters out of the home and it goes out on the streets if I remember correct. But I still feel they needed to get more into the government part of this idea, rather than just concentrate on random average joe citizens.

They do get into that in the third and fourth installments. Actually, they even talk about it in the first and second.
I have no idea which one I saw. I don't feel a need to see more versions of it. The one I saw was some bad guys tunneling in to get the homeless guy they were after and it was just a home invasion thriller, but then you find out the government allows it to purge undesirables from society.
Of course anyone could be a target. I think they also hated the guy who owned the house? He sold home security systems or owned a company that did. Which were not designed to protect targets of a purge........made it seem like he was sort of paying for his sins too.
You know what might be a good idea for a purge movie? If the characters who did not approve of the purge, framed the murderers and made it look like they killed the body, the next day or days later, thus framing them and having them arrested. Just thought of it as an idea at random.

Well, this new movie goes into pretty much detail on how the Govt is involved and why they are trying to promote it (hint, its not the same reason they tell the public), Its really about the rise of a radical 3rd political party, in that regard, it kind of mirrors whats going on in the real world if we keep going the same way, eventually a 3rd party will emerge like this.
The thing I dont like about any of the Purge movies, they focus too much on killings/ murder/ violence...I have to say, if such a thing happened in the real world, I think theft would be the dominant crime taking place, whats there to stop people from tearing into banks and carting off all the money? or blitzing an Army depot and taking military grade weapons and equipment?
