The top scene could have perhaps been cut... But the 33 original also has a scene of Kong feeling Ann up and down so is that any better really? Wasn't it just a reference to the scene in the original?

Yeah that scene. I thought the reason why the 70s one had a similar scene was cause they are were referencing the original. I didn't think it was trying to be '70s porn'
I loved Jackson's KING KONG. Loved it. In fact, if I made a list of my favorite movies, it might even crack the Top 20.
I loved the 1976 version when I was a kid. Watching it now, there are still large parts of it I really like. But I see more of its flaws now too.
The original is a classic and should be judged as a movie of its time. But yes, it has lots of story flaws, both in terms of character and theme. But it's still an extremely important movie in the history of cinema.
Not better than '76. Jackson's Kong has stunning VFX but the story is ludicrous. By the end, Kong's nearly rendered a macguffin.

I jokingly refer to it as that. That is how the scene struck me in the Jessica Lange version.

Wrong on all counts. Jackson's story not only improved all the character motivations (including Kong's) from the 1976 version, it improved them over the 1933 version. The dinosaurs are back. The natives are actually menacing and scary rather than continuing the borderline racism of the '33 version. There is not only a sense of classic '30s style adventure back where it belongs, but added depth and pathos. Jackson's film is superior in every way.

I'd rather watch Skull Island for Kong battling beasties, wafer-thin narrative and all.
Kong '76 had a much better finale. You're desperate for Kong to smack those gunships down. You FEEL every bullet pierce his hide. You weep as he plunges to the ground — something they brushed to the side in Jackson's Kong — that being a movie with great VFX but little more than a nostalgia w@nk.
