Green Book, which I thoroughly enjoyed, won because it had 2 things going for it. Civil Rights, we should never forget what happened, and homosexuality which is popular in Hollywood. I thought Roma was a masterpiece and should have won but at least Green Book got it.
Well Dr. Shirley's friends and family said they were surprised about the gay thing. All they knew is he was once married to a woman and that's all. But that's Hollywood for you, making up side themes that match their narrative. Maybe if he was still alive he would have had a say in the movie and that would not be in there. Sorry they take such liberties with people's lives when they don't need to.

I am so torn....do I even want to start watching Roma?
I have read many things online.
Some say it is just brilliant...others say ...it is sooooo slow and never picks up.
Do I care about a housekeeper's life if it is that slow moving? I dunno.
A friend, that is not a 'film fan' like I am, said...'Save time, come over and watch my paint dry instead."

Yeah, I think you probably do.
Yes, it was slow moving and never picked up, but - it also was utterly brilliant; just a masterpiece of filmmaking. You don't really have to care about a housekeeper's life, because the movie is not about the housekeeper's life. It's about life - how so much of everyone's life happens slowly, one piece at a time, one day at a time, and how little we realize it as it happens. It's a story about how people come to accept their places in life without even realizing it, and how those places shape who they are, how they perceive themselves, and what they expect from others. It's a story of how a society becomes stratified, how isolated everyone - both rich and poor - become in a society that is erected upon a foundation of economic injustice.
It deliberately moves slowly, even when lives are at immediate risk, because... life moves slowly, even when extremely important things are happening. I think the key to appreciating this movie is to not even think about how fast it is or isn't moving, or wondering what's going to happen next and when it's going to get here. Because that's what life is really like. In the movie, things take as long as they take because that's how long they take, and you just have to let it happen as it comes - just like life itself.
The movie is not the story of the housekeeper's life - she's just the tool Cuaron uses to show every one of us a little bit about who we are and why.

Then rename it the American Movie Awards.
Don't hold your breath for this Academy nominating a Palestinian film bout their struggle with Israel.
The Oscars always had specific bias and now (Black Panther?) It has gone full blown Pop Culture MTV Awards. I think the International community has completely turned their back on this once respectable Academy.
