I always found the end of Withnail and I quite poignant, when Withnail says his farewell to Marwood in London's Regent's Park, before delivering a wine-enhanced soliloquy from Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet: Prince of Denmark in front of an audience of disinterested Wolves in the enclosure.
Although the films ending is certainly less sombre than the novel, which saw Withnail dying by suicide by pouring a bottle of wine into the barrel of Monty's shotgun and then pulling the trigger as he drank from it. Bruce Robinson changed the film ending, as he believed it was "too dark".
The final music, "Withnail's Theme" by David Dundas and Rick Wentworth is also very haunting and suits the mood perfectly.
Almost 600 posts in this thread and I see the little arrow indicated that I've already posted (some years ago probably), but I have to say this is one of my favorite music scenes ever in the movies. Ralph Macchio and Steve Vai in Crossroads' guitar duel.
Favorite music scene? Easy! The smile on Geena Davis' face is priceless, and so is Sarandon's liquor swig. Amazing song, amazing cinematography. They've crossed over and are starting to own it.
The song (Modern English's Melt with You) that plays at the last scene and follows to the end credits where they depict the California highway is so fitting. Love the song. It's the perfect summer car song.
