I though the movie was brilliant and pointed out many things with the world we live it, it’s easily Mortensen's best movie in my opinion.
I loved the movie. It was very smart and had a lot to say. In the hands of a lesser writer, the main character would have been the flawless hero and the in-laws the dastardly villain. But that wasn't this story. The main character had a lot of admirable qualities, but he had his own blind spots and faults too. And the antagonist wasn't a mustache-twirling villain. He really did want what he thought was best for the kids.
Is it Mortensen's best movie? I don't know. Largely a matter of taste. I dearly love THE LORD OF THE RINGS films, and EASTERN PROMISES is brilliant. A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE is also fantastic.
But no doubt. CAPTAIN FANTASTIC is a great movie.
If you want something along a similar vein, check out LEAVE NO TRACE. It is sadder than CAPTAIN FANTASTIC but deals with similar themes, and it is more proof that Thomasin McKenzie is one of the best young actresses working today. And Ben Foster is brilliant as always.
