I disagree. I thought it was original and very clever. It has great appeal to many audiences. It should garner a few Oscar nominations, if not for the performances, at least for the set designs and technology (they give those out at a separate ceremony than the televised one).
I'm curious, what you thought was original about it.
Other movies were about toys coming alive in the real world.
‘The Indian in the Cupboard’
'Night at the Museum'
'Time Toys'
Even 'Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer' cartoon contained a side plot about misfit toys coming alive, and needing little boys and girls to want to play with them. Tangentially speaking, the Barbie movie was a spin off from 'the misfit toys.' The only difference was Barbie went into the real world.

Agreed. The movie was not original and pretty cliche... the powerful clueless executives, etc.
The only thing going for the movie was that it was fun, colourful, decent musical numbers and the star was likeable and not hard to look at.
Nothing about the movie plot was amazing or different. It was basic Hollywood stuff.
I watched it once and that's probably the limit. It's an okay movie, just way too overhyped.

I agree with this summation. I thought the movie was enjoyable, but it wasn't that deep. Not that deep, but IMO, it DID have a message to it. My husband disagrees...he just thought "it was a fun movie" but he got no message from it.
I DID think Gosling, and Margot Robbey made it fun to watch. I thought Gosling had some great lines. lol
