some recent faves, from the last few decades:

after life - Japan
Yi Yi - Taiwan

some classic ones I love:

Wild Strawberries (Ingmar Bergman)
Amarcord (Fellini)
400 Blows (Truffaut)
most of the 60s Jean-Luc Godard films are great

most of Kurosawa; 'Throne Of Blood' is especially incredible, and 'Lower Depths' (which is more of a dark comedy) is (IMO) his most underrated

'Kwaidan' and 'Harakiri' (both Masaki Kobayashi) are both amazing; the visual design and the music in both are extremely memorable

Satyajit Ray's dramas - Bengali films from India. The 'Apu' trilogy is one of the greatest things I think I've ever seen, and he made several other very, very good films also. They are non-Bollywood Indian films: dramas, not any singing or dancing, a bit literary, but the look and the storytelling is as finely crafted as it gets.

'Sword Of Doom' is a great Japanese samurai flick; a very dark one, but extremely well-made. The lead actor is phenomenal.

'A Touch Of Zen' is a great Taiwanese flick from the early 70s, mixing martial arts and drama. The camera work reminds me of an old John Ford western (or Kurosawa) - it looks amazing, and the plot is a bit slow, but the drama is well-done, and the action sequences (because they are seperated by long stretches of drama) are explosive. It's adapted from a Chinese literary classic, and there are Buddhist overtones, and ghost story elements in there as well...
