Casting ruins a movie faster than anything and GWTW was cast perfectly.
And as the write up says, despite being filmed only several years after talking and color - it holds up beautifully.
I always say that if you look at this film now you will see that most of the characters are flat-out fools except for Mammy (Hattie McDaniel). She comes out smelling like a rose while the others are vain and selfish and some are comically flawed. Scarlett's mother seems to have some sense but she can't get past her conventional thoughts. Melanie, well she's 'too good to be true' as Scarlett says...
I do not think Leslie Howard was the right person for Ashley. I know he was a very famous film star in the 1930s and 1940s but he
1) was too old to be Ashley ( maybe people just looked OLD then compared to now). Actually he was 46 in 1939 much, much too old to be Ashley.
2) was English, not southern...
Granted, Clark Gable did not try to sound Southern and Vivien Leigh was English but....
