As an old Generation X guy I normally dismiss the quality of today's music due to the massive use of (1) AutoTune software and, more recently (2) Artificial Intelligence. The former corrects bad vocal tones. The latter makes it even more fake. I am aware of this as a fully-trained mechanical and software engineer. I am also a data scientist trained on AI/ML. I tend to dismiss today's "vocalists" in preference for the elite vocalists of the 1970s with vocal talent that had to stand on its own without AutoTune or AI - technology that did not exist at the time for the music industry. Carly Simon is among my favorite vocalists from that era.
I had thought Olivia Rodrigo was just another woman with limited talent like Taylor just getting exposure due to AutoTune and a focus on her personality and appearance rather than vocal talent. But she surprised me with her cover of "You're so vain". I thought it was awesome. It gives me hope that a vocalist from today's young generation can actually stand with the talent of the past. Full applause from me for Olivia's suprisingly good cover.
