The Red Hot Chili Peppers are known for the musicianship of their members, which by the way doesn't guaranty a good album, but which has worked well for the Chili Peppers.
A band that was created as an "all-star band" in the 70s was UK, with John Wetton (King Crimson, Asia), Bill Bruford (Yes, King Crimson) Alan Holdsworth (Various Jazz) and Eddie Jobson (Roxy Music). They did a very good prog album titled just "UK", and then another with Terry Bozzio (Zappa) playing drums instead of Bruford.
Zappa always had elite musicians in his bands, very much in the same way as jazz groups do.
Asia is a legit "supergroup" with Steve Howe (Yes), John Wetton (KC), Carl Palmer (ELP), and Geoff Downes (Yes, Buggles). The style is pretty commercial/ordinary compared to what their resumes suggest, but its not bad.
Wow cool stuff, I know all these bands, I miss the days when you could read the backs of album covers a learn this stuff ,now you got to wikki everything. I always knew there was something about the buggles that was more than met the eye

Yeah- Geoff Downes and Trevor Horne were the Buggles. Downes played keyboards on the Yes Drama album while Horne provided lead vocals. Horne also produced the album as well as others. Definitely more going on than lite pop.
I always thought The Smiths were a pretty good band. Every song they wrote was pretty good, usually great, and every member is among the best musicians of the alternative era. Few have ever written more unique and interesting lyrics or sung those lyrics with more skill and wit than Morrissey. Few have written more tasteful and tuneful guitar parts with more subtlety and dexterity than Johnny Marr. I really like The Smiths.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Bad Company. They were a "super-group" and a super band! They put out some great rock in their day.
Paul Rodgers-Free
Simon Kirke-Free
Mick Ralphs-Mott the Hoople
Boz Burrell-King Crimson

Good lineup! Yep, when they first came out around June of '74 those first 2 lp's of theirs got a tremendous amount of airplay! A couple others worth mentioning:
CSNY--
David Crosby (Byrds)
Steven Stills (Buffalo Springfield)
Graham Nash (Hollies)
Neil Young (Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young and Crazy Horse)
Buffalo Springfield--
Steven Stills (CSNY, Manassas, over a dozen solo lp's)
Richie Furay (Poco, Souther Hillman and Furay band. And a half dozen solo lp's
Jim Messina (Poco, Loggins and Messina, several solo lp's)
Neil Young (CSNY, Crazy Horse, many many solo lp's)
Bruce Palmer (bass) One solo lp, released on Verve Forecast in 1969
Dewey Martin (drummer) One solo lp, released on UNI in 1971
There was / is only ONE super band - and they disbanded 42 years ago.
Their bassist still performs today and is the world's greatest entertainer.
