I just had to go read that after perusing the comments.
I have 15 of those albums. And truth be told, about 10 of them probably could go in the trash and I wouldn't miss them.
Exceptions:
6. Tim. C'mon, be serious. While some of the tracks no longer hold up, at least half of it does. Although one could buy a hits compilation, I suppose. But I'll never tired of "Here Comes a Regular" or "Left of the Dial".
9. ******* Brew. The author really doesn't like jazz. No more be said here.
12. Physical Graffiti. That it's different from the rest of LZ's catalog is exactly why it's a keeper.
34. Time Out. See ******* Brew. There's always a time and place for this one.
64. Dark Side of the Moon. You can't separate the singles from the context. I save this one for long trips, and it's never gotten dusty.
75. Sgt. Pepper. Might be the stupidest inclusion in the entire article.
83. American Beauty. Author doesn't like the Dead. This is the only Dead I've ever purchased. Coincidentally I just put it back in rotation in my car last week.
That said, I could do without 1, 2, 14, 22, 32, 39, 69 and 80.
I probably wouldn't have purchased half the albums on his list anyway. And I'm surprised at some of the critically acclaimed junk that wasn't included (Amy Winehouse, anyone?).
Remove from my record collection? Not on your life.
He hates these albums because many of them are beloved by rock critics. He is a self styled rock critic and wants to gain attention from his blog.
I am a former rock critic. Some rock critics are pompous. Like Kurt Loder. Lester Bangs was a genious. So is Robert Cristgau, who wrote for the "Village Voice" for many years.
He's just trying to get attention. And a column in a legit paper. Pi$$ing other critics off will never work.
3. Nirvana - Nevermind
24. Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine
32. Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
38. Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention - Were Only In It For The Money
44. Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking
63. Rush - Moving Pictures
64. Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
69. U2 - War
83. Grateful Dead - Almost All
I own 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 14, 17, 28, 30, 47, 53, 56, 62, 63, 69, 72, 74, 87, 92, and 93. Oh well. This guy's opinion means nothing. You know what albums I think we should get rid of? None at all. If it makes someone happy, big deal. As long as I don't have to listen to stuff I hate, then all the more power to everyone else for their taste.
OK. I guess I am the winner (or loser, according to this annoying #rick)
I must be an aging indie rock hipster who also enjoys jazz, some rap, Elvis, ALL of THE DEAD ALBUMS, and yet thinks Lou Reed was "just like Jesus' son" and enjoyed my stint as a college DJ.
Here's how bad (or good my record collection is) I have. 1,2,4,5,6, 8,10,11,15.18,20,21,22,23,24,27,28,30 (all of them)24,37,38,40,43(and all Kinks albums)47,48,50,57,64,68,(but I gave it to my son who likes it more)69,71.74,77,80,85,86,89,92,95,97, and 99. I have all Lou Reed albums and all VU albums.
What flew into his bonnet? Did he try to be a college DJ and get rejected?
He dislikes really... everything. And he's pretty nasty about it.
Yes I wonder if he was in a bad mood when he put that all together??
