Richards came out of the chaotic neo-psychedelic scene of Anton Newcombe and the Brian Jonestown Massacre in the 90's, and absorbed some lessons about songwriting and production that she puts to fine use on her albums. She developed into a unique singer/songwriter whose music straddles a 70's folk rock vibe mingled with electronica, colored with a subtle, vague misting of 90's-ish psychedelia. Her albums have a languid groove to them, but they're never vapid or lazy. Her lyrics are remarkable at times ("It Was Given" is one of the more compelling stories I've heard in a song lately; "Seven Hours" drips with a smoldering, passionate hurt that will break your heart if you let it...), her albums are well-produced (despite probably selling in the four digits at most), and she's easy on the eyes.
I always thought she'd really appeal to people who like a mellow west-coast sound that evokes the better aspects of the 70's without being retro, which also rewards closer listening. Alas, she goes through life undiscovered, with an audience too small to even sustain her, I suspect. I think the demographic here is skewed toward a lot of people who might dig her if they only had a chance to hear her...
