Why did they become hits?? The Beatles combined so many styles into their own repertoire and became influential for many of today's artists. One of the Fab Four's early influences was a chap named Buddy Holly, and many were drawn in to his style. But The Beatles became the group to watch and listen to in their time. They had......it! They had an uncanny ability, I'm sure, to reach across different charts across the world with their music. All four of them became pretty good songwriters in their own rights. I admire that band for doing so much in such a short period of time; keep in mind that this was just six and a half years.
