I think The Bangles may have had the most successful S&G cover with Hazy Shade Of Winter.

It is a very good version SP! I've got an obscure one here. The We Five's claim to fame is "You Were On My Mind". Crispian St. Peter done a version of it that Jamie released in the summer of '67; was on his Pied Piper album as well. Love the version!

I'm partial to The Clash's version of "I Fought The Law," originally a Bobby Fuller Four song. Yes, Bobby Fuller had the better singing voice, but the Clash . . . well, they're the Clash. They made it their own.

Other covers I like:
X, "Breathless" (Jerry Lee Lewis) and "Soul Kitchen" (The Doors)
Gary Jules, "Mad World" (Tears For Fears)
R.E.M., "Arms of Love" (Robyn Hitchcock)
The Futureheads, "Hounds of Love" (Kate Bush)
The Jam, "David Watts" (The Kinks)
The English Beat, "Tears of a Clown" (Smokey Robinson)
The Replacements, "Black Diamond" (KISS)
Cross Section, "Hi Heel Sneakers" (not sure who did original)
Johnny Cash, "Hurt" (Nine Inch Nails)

^^ Yep, they had to for copyright reasons; there was already a band called The Beat here with a copyright on the name. For the same reason, all but one Charlatans albums were issued here under the name "Charlatans UK"

I'm surprised people haven't mentioned Joe Cocker. I liked a few of his covers notably his cover of "With A little help from my friends," by the Beatles, which is arguably more famous than the original.

Also Gary Jules version of Mad World by Tears for fears was excellent. Superior to the original IMO.

James Taylor did a mean cover of Woodstock by Joni Mitchell (don't know if he ever recorded this, but he did it once on the Howard Stern show live and I used to have it on my computer)

I really liked Maxwell's version of This woman's work by Kate Bush.

But with covers more often than not I hate them.

Hated Dixie Chicks cover of Landslide by Fleetwood Mac

Hated Alicia Keys version of Wild Horses by the Stones,

Also hated Corinne Bailey Rae's version of "Munich," by the Editors.

Also hated TV on the Radio's cover of Mr. Grieves by the Pixies. Horrible.
