Starts with the song itself: the thematic elements. Also, the video production. Or, maybe just the nature of the creation: for example, almost anything by Nirvana or Alice in Chains qualifies given the ultimate self-destruction of their respective singers and bands due to heroin.

I'll start with only three. Reply with yours, please!

Great cover of Rush's "the Garden," from Clockwork Angels (2012), by Fleesh. The washed-out colors evoke the melancholy of this track that was the end of a 40 year run by an absolutely towering Progressive Rock band. Last track, of their last studio album, it brings a tear every listen. Fleesh in some ways equals and exceeds teasing out the emotional depth of the original composition...

Another stupefying cover by Fleesh, "Script for a Jester's Tear" by Marillion, album of the same title (1983). IMO, vastly exceeding Marillion's talents on this particular track, but YMMV! I challenge any Prog Rock fan to not be moved by this, Gabby Vessoni's vocals at their absolute peak.

Lastly, "Would?" by Alice in Chains, the final track of their magnum opus, Dirt (1992). Somehow uplifting, yet pitch black, and terrifyingly poignant all rolled into one: absolute brilliance and a great video production. Said Jerry Cantrell: "We did a lot of soul searching on this album. There's a lot of intense feelings. We deal with our daily demons through music. All of the poison that builds up during the day we cleanse when we play". And: Drug use was front and center as a lyrical theme on the album. Three tracks (Sickman, Junkhead & God Smack) specifically reference heroin use and its effects.

Yes, I got the title slightly wrong, but it's a powerful ballad for me (long ago reasons). Thanks for posting the video (haven't figured out how to do that yet).

I would also add Love of My Life - Queen (any live version)

They've got a number of meticulously crafted sad ballads.

Here's another one

"Patience," by Guns N Roses, much better than the over played "Sweet Child Of Mine."

"The Way It Is," by Tesla. Pretty straight forward lyrics that describes the way it was with me.

"Angel Eyes," by John Hiatt. Admittedl the first time I heard this one was when Jeff Healy had a hit with it. But this version is terrific

Honorable mention to Drivin N Cryin's for their song "For You." I could not find a good version of it on YouTube though.

Dude(ette), good ones. I knew "Before the Dawn" but not the latter. Thank you!
