The original six of the Allman Brothers Band in my opinion were the most talented band ever to come out of the U.S.Listen to there music,,,,I can't get enough after 40 years.......VINMAN Allmans #1
A real popularity contest!
The Allman Bros were very good (Eat A Peach!), but I think the first LP by Black Oak Arkansas is absolutely superb, and, by a wide margin, my favorite Southern band. From the second LP onward (downward) they plunged to mediocrity.
would the black crowes be considered southern rock? they are from georgia and do blues stuff.
also as janis joplin fan, I always felt her stuff off of pearl had a sound similar to what is usually classified as southern rock, she too was also from north texas, very close to louisiana.
but I really like the allmans, petty,zz top, and LS.
I had the pleasure of seeing the original Allman Brothers Band, when they could have been called the best blues band in the U.S. When Duane Allman and Berry Oakley were killed, to me the soul of the band was gone forever. But when they were alive, there was the Allman Brothers Band and there was anyone else coming up from the south, most of whom sounded very sadly inconsistent to me.
